Tie Bars...
Yes I have HD Adjustable Tie Bars. I would never want to use them to move the wheels far enough back to accomocate the wheels. The handling would suffer greatly - as well as wear the tires very quickly. Pablo, after looking at the Sportspack template, it did seem like an awful lot of metal would have to come off for what I had to accomplish. Its just that lower front edge that is causing a problem. I was hoping someone could give me an idea how much is normal and perhaps some suggestions about how to do it with the best possible results. I would like to continue to use special arches for a variety of reasons, but I would use W&P if needed. In the states, its alright if the wheels slightly protrude beyond the arches. As is sits now, only the outermost edge of the sidewall is beyond the arches. It actually looks quite nice. Any suggestions? Vince

Adjustable Tie Bar set up?
Hi all, I have just fitted hi-los, Avo adjustable shocks & 1.5 degree negative camber arms..... I also have a new pair of adjustble tie bars but am un sure as to how they should be set.......... Any advice would be great. If they need seeting up properly by a specialist, could you recommend any in the Heathrow area? (By the way I refuse to use Minispeed as Matt who runs the place like to rip people off!!!) Regards

It's probably easiest to remove the complete lower arm plus tie bar from the car, then you can apply WD40, heat, hammer, hacksaw, etc.

Would you believe I had one of these sheer off the other day, luckily I was doing about 2 mph, had it been 5 minutes later I wouldn't be typing this.
Luckily no damage, put on an adjustable one (been meaning to do so for ages) and off I went, and done the other side this morning, and handling a lot lot better

Top Tie Bar Bolts
Hi All, Has anybody got a couple of spare bolts for the top tie bar? where it bolts into the block? or even the correct dimensions of the bolts so that we can source new ones?
I only ask, as when we did the engine swop last week, we must have gotten in a muckin fuddle with the bolts, and put 2 in that aren't suitable, as they have just pulled out, leaving some nice metal in the threads. Thankfully, they look pretty short, so I'm hoping there will be some good thread left to bite onto the proper ones!
If not, then it's out with the taps.....
FYI, it's an A, circa '78, so no doubt they will be UNF....
Kind of embarrassing really, as i put them in! oops :-(
Cheers,

Top engine tie bar
Are there different tie bars for A and A+ engines?
I have just put in a new A+ engine (old was just A) and have tried to fit the tie bar and it is a good 2cm too long and the bolts don't line up with the holes. Its the tie bar that attaches to the block just above the flywheel housing.
Do A+ engines have a slightly shorter tie bar?

Is it an automatics tiebar ? the tiebar for auto's are longer, and are easy to identify because they have a few 'pips' forged into one side. the manual item is completely smooth form end to end.

Top Engine Tie Bar
hi all,
i really need help to get my mini advantage sorted, as its my first car, (to drive, i already got one mid restoration) but im having a problem
the exhaust keeps coming pulled apart at the manifold, and ive traced it back to the engine tie bar on the left hand side of the engine.
how do i undo the bolt on the bulkhead end of the bar? i was looking through the haynes manual, and it said a lock nut on the bottom, because it also has the earth strap attached to it.
i cant get a spanner in there, or anything.
what do i do?? i need to get it sorted asap.
any help greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!!

genrally the bush at the bulk head end on the tie bar doesnt have problems, its the one on the block, just undo it at the block, remove the bolt and take the bush support tube out, can be in two on earlyer cars. put new bushes in same as they were before poly onces are better will last alot longer. then the hard bit is pushing the engine back in the bay while u thread bolt in again with tie bar, all not helped by restricted space of servo and crank vent. i found when i replaced mine i had to get two people to push engine back far enouth and hold it there so i cud get the bolt back into the block. rembering to put the earth back if urs is attached there mine isnt. and u can get a spanner in there just takes a long time to undo as there is little space, think i spent 30min undoing it, frustrating but u just have to keep at it, i cant rember if i used a socket or spanner, i had same problem with exhaust manifold leaking because of it. took me a gd two hours to do just because of the lack of space good luck and bring some mates if possible to help.

i need to get the bolt out because the top bracket under the brake and clutch cylinders has split, and i just want to put a washer in there to hold it all together for a bit.
but i cannot get it out. im about to smash the bloody thing to pieces

i gess if u really cant get a spanner there best remove the brake and cluch resovwires, if the bracket it damaged underneath you will need to remove them anyway. i think it best to weld a washer on top as they do tend to pull through with time.

You can reach the nut on the bottom of the bulkhead mounting from underneath with socket and extension bars. Just put the car on ramps or axle stands and look up between the back of the engine and the bulkhead. Two 12" extension bars will reach it.

upper tie bar!!!!!!
Hi there all,
Just got a new prob with my old mini and was wondering if anyone could help me on this one
I took the mini out for its first drive of the year and noticed that the engine was moving alot, on looking under the bonnet i found that the upper tie bar bolt the connects the bar to the engine had sheared off, it looked like the guy who had the car before me had done a bodge job and instead of replacing the bushes they had just put a spacer on the bolt to tighten it up, this worked but looks like not too much of the bolt was in the engine, i have tryed to get the bit out of the engine but it is well in there and will not come out with the use of a extraction set!!!!
what i was wondering is, there is a bracket that comes off the tie bar and goes to the engine block about 2 inch forward of were the origanal bolt goes in to the engine, i was wondering if there is a longer tie bar you can get the would fit to this hole as i can not see me getting the old one out!!!!
NOT A HAPPY BUNNY!!!!
Thanks for any help.
